Arc Flash Protection Solution

Arc Flash Protection Solution

  1. 1. Response time under 100 microseconds
  2. 2. Passive fiber transmission with EMI resistance
  3. 3. Dual criteria: arc signal and overcurrent increment

A fast switchgear arc protection system for arc flash risks caused by internal faults in high-voltage switchgear.

Arc heat can reach thousands of degrees or even 10000°C, melting metal equipment within milliseconds and producing strong explosive pressure.

Fatal Threat of Arc Flash

As a core node of power systems, high-voltage switchgear can generate highly destructive arc flash during internal faults, threatening equipment and personnel safety.

Traditional differential or overcurrent protection can be slow, while an arc lasting 100 ms can already cause serious equipment damage.

Traditional sensors are vulnerable to visible-light interference, and point monitoring cannot cover the whole cabinet, leaving blind spots.

Technical Solution

NVS offers the SL-ALS01 arc sensor, which uses ultraviolet spectral detection to capture 300 nm-380 nm signals generated by arc discharge.

Special coating-based filtering removes visible and near-infrared background noise at the physical layer and prevents false triggers from ambient light.

The probe contains no electronic components. Arc signals travel through optical cable to a photoelectric converter, which outputs a 5V analog voltage for fast breaker control.

Typical Applications

It is suitable for busbar protection in medium and low-voltage switchgear up to 35 kV, with cabinet-mounted sensors working with overcurrent criteria for fast tripping.

Box substation and rectifier cabinet protection: fast arc detection and protection in compact spaces.

Feeder cable joint protection: monitors arc risks at critical connection points.

System Value

Fast fault isolation: total clearing time can be controlled within 100 ms while preventing false trips and missed trips.

Precise fault localization: helps O&M teams quickly identify the faulty switchgear cabinet and shorten repair time.

Intrinsic safety: suitable for high-voltage, high-current, and strong electromagnetic environments.
